October is Fair Trade Month!

I discovered the Fair Trade mission a few years back when buying tea. It became important to me to buy my Rooibos, a South African tea, Fair Trade certified. Doing this simple act of buying a certified tea, that I typically keep in stock, gives me such a good feeling knowing I am lending my support to empower South African women.
What is Fair Trade?
Fair Trade USA is the leading, non-profit, third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in North America. They certify transactions between U.S. companies and their international suppliers to ensure that fair trade farmers and workers are paid fair prices and wages.
This non-profit ensures that employees have safe working conditions and development funds to empower and uplift their communities. Fair Trade USA also helps to protect and support the environment by encouraging companies to maintain responsible and sustainable business practices.
The Fair Trade Impact!
- Protecting the environment – Farmers learn and implement environmentally sustainable practices.
- Building business – Workers are empowered to demand fair wages and treatment.
- Empowering women – Women are guaranteed healthcare, rights and freedom from harassment.
- Supporting education – Revenues are set aside to build schools.
- Fighting poverty – Farmers are given market-based tools to lift themselves out of poverty.
- Providing healthcare – Workers and their families gain access to doctors, medicine and proper nutrition.

ReplyDeleteI've sought out fair trade items ever since visiting a co-op of women in Central America that sells their products via fair trade organizations. The different projects that grew out of their weaving business are amazing. The families escaped poverty, the kids went to school instead of begging in the market- a common sight elsewhere in the town. Love to see companies like this one marketing fair trade products and I'd love to win :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your story!
