Michelle Obama Promotes Breastfeeding
By: WorldNetDaily |
“In a "Let's Move" policy report issued last May, one of the problems mothers may have with breastfeeding starts in the hospital where after birth, "many babies are unnecessarily given formula and separated from their mothers, making it harder to start and practice breastfeeding." - {Daily Flotus}I am tickled by this, as I truly believe hospitals being one of the main culprits in the lack luster rates of breastfeeding, all across the board, considering most births take place in the hospital (as opposed to home-births). My own out of home, birth experiences (birth center & hospital) I had to “fight” with nurses who were under pressure from a rigid 4 hour feeding schedule. They went through such lengths to get my baby to comply with it. Including stripping my new baby down to her diaper and bending her back and forth in an effort to get her to nurse. The change in hospital practices MUST start there. Babies, when they are born healthy, are truly resilient, and versatile in their feeding schedules. This needs to be recognized and accepted by hospitals. This change can also reduce pressure on nurses and their attempts to push formula on new moms. As I have been told, my sleeping, non-eating baby would prefer formula.
Another change that must go are those stupid, cheap diaper bags filled with “information" and formula by formula companies. Let’s see some real information from companies like La Leche League for a change, and breastfeeding supplies to boot. Efficient, (NOT cheap) hand-pumps would be a big encouragement to new moms.
Mrs. Obama states:
"And because it's important to prevent obesity early, we're also working to promote breastfeeding, especially in the black community -- where 40 percent of our babies never get breastfed at all, even in the first weeks of life, and we know that babies that are breastfed are less likely to be obese as children,"A welcome change we need considering, “Only 3 percent of births occur at U.S. hospitals with the "Baby Friendly" designation."
