Free Organic Palm Shortening! (Closed)
In an attempt to promote health amongst my loved ones, I’ve largely stayed away from fried foods…much to my husband’s dismay. I agreed that I could fry foods once in a while (More like every six months!) but wouldn't not make a habit of frying our foods. However, through research, it’s dawned on me that the oils that are used in packaged foods and cooking oils are typically chemically processed by hydrogenation, turning fats into trans fat, the bad kind, has given fats in general a bad reputation. I also learned that it’s good to incorporate fat, the good kind, in my diet. So, I was tickled to try out Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening!
Trans-Fat free, This oil is derived from the palm fruit. Essentially, it is Palm oil with some of it’s unsaturated fats removed. The removal of this fat gives it a firm texture and a high melting point (97 degrees). Unlike Palm oil in it’s natural state, shortening is colorless and tasteless. The texture resembles whipped butter and has a clean, non-greasy taste.

In true Tropical Traditions style, the shortening is not massed produced, but handmade on small family farms in South America that are certified by ProForest.
The Review!
My husband loves fried Tilapia fish. He also LOVES palm oil. The shortening heated up pretty quickly. It cooks just like palm oil as far as giving the fish a nice crispy texture without the coloring or flavor of palm oil. My husband said the fish tasted just like it was cooked in palm oil, with the exception of the coloring. He enjoyed his fish immensely, and I enjoyed serving him his favorite food without the worries of trans-fat. Win-Win.I pretty much use the shortening like I would butter. It really has a nice, lightweight and easy flavor. It completely defies my perception of shortening which has been tainted by mainstreamed shortening.
